Specializing in Nostalgia

Gordon Drysdale was born in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. His artistic talents have been abundantly evident since early childhood. Gordon has always been close to a paint brush or a pencil exercising and honing his
skills as an artist and craftsman. In 1988 Gordon returned to his home
roots in Sudbury Ontario after spending 12 years in Medicine Hat,
Alberta and 7 years on Manitoulin Island. 1988 was the year of decision
to take a step in faith and pursue, full time, the art career that was
so obviously destined to be his."It is a gift and a gift should be
used,to honour the giver, especially when it comes from the ultimate
gift giver".
Since embarking on this journey, Gordon has produced hundreds of
works of art. He began working in oils and switched to acrylics for speed and versatility by 1995. He is accomplished in both of these
media as well as watercolour, conte and pen & ink.
Gordon has produced over 50 limited edition prints, including those
displayed on his website. His paintings have been purchased by corporate and private collectors around the world, and include two in
the permanent collection of the Province of Ontario.
Gordon paints in a very realistic style and many of his works are
often mistaken for photographs. In 1999 he won the national first place award in the ART OF THE AUTOMOBILE competition, sponsored by the
Automobile Journalists Association of Canada. In 2000 he took
national third in the same venue and national second place in 2002.

Artist/Teacher
"I have been painting since 1987. Lessons for 7 years gave me the basics I needed to continue. I paint in oil, acrylics, sketching, and have taken workshops in colour pencil, watercolour, pastels and much more. Every workshop or lesson I have attended, I have learned from it. I use it in every art piece that I produce. I read many books about techniques or different kinds of mediums. This is how I learned my trade.
My artwork consists of painting on any material that the paint will adhere to. Subjects I like to paint are landscapes, portraits, animals, birds, and still life. I have done Woodcarving Clay modeling, Ceramics, Soapstone carving.
I became a teacher 2001 when a friend pushed me to do so. . My classes are in oil and acrylics. I also give workshops in clay on boards, clay figures, palette knife painting and painting a picture in one-day oil or acrylic.
I joined the Rayside-Balfour Whitewater Brush & Palette Art Club in 2001 and have been president for a few years now.
In 2010 I judged an Art Exhibition for the Cavalcade of Colours in Dowling , Ontario."

En Plein Aire Landscape Painter

A professional en plein aire landscape painter, Pierre Sabourin makes his home in Killarney, Ontario. He studied Fine Arts at the University of Ottawa and the National Drawing and Print Council of Canada at the University of Calgary; he has also apprenticed with landscape painter Ferenc Szeles of Hungary. Through the years, Pierre has developed a style of landscape painting that draws upon the influences of Tom Thompson, J.E.H Macdonald, Arthur Lismer, Lawren Harris, Vincent Van Gogh, Igor Grabar, Camile Corot and Edouward Manet. Sabourin is drawn to bold expressionism with rich color and thick impasto manipulating paint and creating shadow, while at times incorporates glass in pigments for luminosity.
"There is a feeling you get when painting in the woods, becoming one with God and universal nature. Touched by this Holy Spirit a deep sense of acceptance prevails. As everything begins to interact, you feel the energy, the power and the peace all around you. You become suspended in time, your mind becomes clear, and you see things that you have never seen before and you know you’re alive. As a young man I traveled across Canada from Newfoundland to Vancouver Island which instilled in me a sense of national pride in Canada’s beauty and diverse culture. Growing up in Sudbury, Ontario during the peak of nickel smelting in the 50’s and 60’s and experiencing the destruction of nature had a profound effect on me."

Marlies Schoenefeld is well known for her landscapes of Killarney Park and the North Channel of Lake Huron.
The woods, water and rocks of the Canadian Shield were her training ground for aquarells, pastels and acrylic paintings.
During the summer Marlies takes her canoe or kayak to her favourite places to paint en plein air.
She shares her love for watercolours with students in Killarney Park and on Paddle and Paint trips on Lake Huron.
Her love of the outdoors and the natural world has inspired her to find the essence of the northern landscape. She uses this knowledge of the woods, the waters and the rocks to simplify the complexity of colour and shapes to the absolute essentials to enable the viewer to feel the scene and become a part of it.

Author/Painter/Volunteer/Teacher
As an orphan of a commercial pilot, deceased before I was born on March 7, 1929, in Bremen, Germany and a young woman who lost her life due to puerperal fever, just after giving birth to me, I was adopted by my maternal grandfather. He happened to be a high ranking engineer but was shafted because he refused to join the Nazi party. He raised me in the spirit of opposition but in 1944 I was taken into the air force thus not completing high school. Following turbulent times during and after the war and escaping from an East German prison I worked in the Westphalian coal mines but chose to leave them for health reasons and ended up in a German unit of the U.S. Army.
There was not much of a future to be expected. I changed course by emigrating to Canada. Because of my formal training I was destined to go into mining again. Working in Creighton as a slusherman and blasting boss after 17 eyars of mining I did not see that as the end of the line. With the help of my wife I managed to work in the mine while taking up studies at Laurentian University. Going full-time in 1964 and graduating in 1966 with honours I went on to study at four universities. We raised a family of two. I taught history, geography and German at high schools in Sault Ste Marie and Midland, became a head of history and a member of the Faculty of Education at the University of Toronto.
Presently I am an accomplished artist, mainly painting landscapes and historical scenes, working as a volunteer and writing. My next book is going into the scariest times of my youth in Germany.

A Unifying Vision for Art. The French River Cutural Industries Council... by Julie Dupuis
Promoting the cultures and arts of the First Nations, Francophone, Anglophone, and Metis populations of the French River-Nipissing corridor is the mission of the French River Cultural Industries Council (FRCIC), a not-for-profit organization dedicated and mandated to bringing economic development to the region through the celebration of local cultures and arts. The group officially evolved into itself in 2009 when it became incorporated. The FRCIC has formed excellent working relationships with several area cultural groups and tirelessly pursues new ones.
To date, it has achieved laudable success in developing valuable community programs. For adults, the FRCIC offers culturally specific courses approved by its cultural advisors and given by culturally appropriate instructors. For youth aged 6-16, the Summer Arts Experience that takes place over five days in August provides the opportunity to experience dance, visual arts and crafts, drama, music, and culture from the First Nations, Francophone, Metis, and Anglophone populations. The FRCIC is also expanding its scope in 2012, hosting the First Annual Arts and Cultural Festival, which will float from community to community within the region.
The Backstreet Gallery is the FRCIC’s heart and soul as the location where creativity, commitment, and enterprise collide, and as a permanent display of local talent. With 300 people attending the inaugural—and now annual—vernissage in November 2010, this hub of cultural activity shines from within with remarkable artwork, a former health centre reclaimed and renovated, redecorated and revived.
More than a united group with a common vision.
Four cultures. One people.

Although the Sudbury Art Club has been around for over 40 years it is now bigger and better than ever. With an active membership of 87 artists we continue to grow and provide a substantial networking community for local artists. The mandate of the club is to create and maintain a positive environment for the development, coordination and promotion of art activities in Greater Sudbury while fostering interest in, and an appreciation of art.
Club membership runs from June 1st to May 31st and is open to all. The fellowship among our members fosters growth and creativity for the artists – not to mention just good old fashioned friendship. Activities include Wednesday programs, workshops from prominent artists and plein air trips to local sites. Regular sessions and the monthly business meetings are held in the Carmichael Community Centre in Minnow Lake.
Spring and Fall Art Shows are a central feature of our work. Club members get to strut their stuff at these shows which are free to the public and open all weekend. It comes as no surprise that the appreciation of art is on the rise in Greater Sudbury. Both shows are well attended and the feedback is positive and encouraging.
With the growing public appreciation of art in our community, the Sudbury Art Club invites all artists—beginners and experienced alike—to come see what we are all about. Visit us on the web at www.sudburyartclub.blogspot.com
