Author/Painter/Volunteer/Teacher
As an orphan of a commercial pilot, deceased before I was born on March 7, 1929, in Bremen, Germany and a young woman who lost her life due to puerperal fever, just after giving birth to me, I was adopted by my maternal grandfather. He happened to be a high ranking engineer but was shafted because he refused to join the Nazi party. He raised me in the spirit of opposition but in 1944 I was taken into the air force thus not completing high school. Following turbulent times during and after the war and escaping from an East German prison I worked in the Westphalian coal mines but chose to leave them for health reasons and ended up in a German unit of the U.S. Army.
There was not much of a future to be expected. I changed course by emigrating to Canada. Because of my formal training I was destined to go into mining again. Working in Creighton as a slusherman and blasting boss after 17 eyars of mining I did not see that as the end of the line. With the help of my wife I managed to work in the mine while taking up studies at Laurentian University. Going full-time in 1964 and graduating in 1966 with honours I went on to study at four universities. We raised a family of two. I taught history, geography and German at high schools in Sault Ste Marie and Midland, became a head of history and a member of the Faculty of Education at the University of Toronto.
Presently I am an accomplished artist, mainly painting landscapes and historical scenes, working as a volunteer and writing. My next book is going into the scariest times of my youth in Germany.
