Theatre Cambrian presents Grease

Feb. 8 – 23

Sheridan Auditorium, Sudbury Secondary

8 p.m.

This is THE 1950's rock 'n' roll musical. Rydell High's spirited class of '59; gum chewing, hubcap stealing, hot rod loving boys with D.A.'s and their wise cracking girls in bobby sox and pedal pushers---capture the look and sound of the 1950s in a rollicking musical. While hip Danny Zuko and wholesome Sandy Dumbrowski resolve the problems of their mutual attraction, the gang sings and dances its way through such nostalgic scenes as the pajama party, the prom, the burger palace, and the drive in movie. Songs recall the Buddy Holly hiccups, the Little Richard yodels and the Elvis Presley wiggles that made the music of the 50s a gas. Grease's eight year run made Broadway history and its recent long running revival put it among today's most popular musicals.Nightly at 8pm except Sunday nights and Monday nights).  Tickets are $26.50 for adults, $21.50 for students/seniors and $16.00 for children 13 and under.  Ticket outlets are Records on Wheels, Four Corners Independent Grocer and Jett Landry Music.

GREATER SUDBURY HERITAGE MUSEUMS presents  “ Doors Open Sudbury 2008"  Doors Open Ontario is a province-wide celebration of community heritage. Designed to create access, awareness and excitement about our heritage, Doors Open Ontario provides residents and visitors with a unique opportunity to explore and enjoy sometimes hidden and always interesting places and spaces in Ontario cities, towns and villages – and all free of charge!  The Greater Sudbury Heritage Museums will be operating DOORS OPEN SUDBURY in 2008 as part of the celebration of the 125 years of community development into what is now the City of Greater Sudbury.  In 1883, the Canadian Pacific Railway reached what is now called the City of Greater Sudbury. It is time to celebrate our evolution. One way to celebrate is to recognize the unique spaces in our community.  Our churches, schools and public spaces tell us a great deal about who we are and how we evolved into the City of Greater Sudbury. If you or your group would like to be involved, we are looking for partners to work with us in recognizing who we are, in every corner of this City. We are looking for people to tell us about the important buildings and places in your neighbourhood, and to help us relay the story to the rest of the City.  Where and When:  The event itself will take place the 18th and 19th of July 2008.  We hope to have buildings from every section of the City .For more information, please contact:  Jim Fortin, Curator, Greater Sudbury Heritage Museums, 692-4448, jim.fortin@greatersudbury.ca

The Performing Arts Centre (PAC) report was presented to the priority committee Nov. 7th and after much debate and discussion --city council decided to go ahead with the next step of developing a performing arts centre. The performing arts centre (PAC) committee recommended the project move ahead as a priority for the city and for the most part council agreed. Sudbury is a step closer to realizing a multi-use arts centre and artistic district in Sudbury. It was suggested the building have seats to hold 1,800 people, be acoustically superior, and green. PAC suggested this is the first phase of an entire arts district located in Sudbury’s downtown core. This project will now undertake a business plan and report back to council in April 2008.

Sudbury Theatre Centre

Young Adult Actor Needed at STC

Artistic Director of the Sudbury Theatre Centre, George Pothitos, is looking for a  community actor who is able to play a young man aged 17 in the spring production of Rabbit Hole by David Lindsay-Abaire.

Rabbit Hole received the Pulitzer Award for Best Drama in 2007.  It tells the story of a family working its way through the loss of a child.

“There’s a lot of talent in Sudbury and I’m always trying to find ways to use community actors when I can,” says Pothitos.  “As you know, it’s not often possible since we are a professional company.  The biggest challenge for the community actor is not the talent but the time commitment it takes to be part of a main stage show at the Sudbury Theatre Centre.”

Pothitos also stresses that the candidate must have previous stage experience since this is not a walk-on part.  “The young man will have three very good scenes with a number of lines.  It’s a great part.”

Rehearsals for Rabbit Hole begin March 11 (March Break for high school students) and continue until the show opens March 27.  The play itself runs from March 27 to April 6, primarily in the evenings.  There are three matinees scheduled, Sundays March 30 and April 6 as well as Friday, April 4.

To receive the audition package from the Sudbury Theatre Centre, call the box office at 674-8381.  Auditions are by appointment only on Friday, December 7 beginning at 3:30 p.m.

The Sudbury Theatre Centre’s Tuesdays with Morrie now playing, this play is based on the best selling book by Mitch Albom

Canadian Composer Robert Lemay  Beats 150 International Colleagues

To Win 2007 Prix Luxembourg

The Canadian Music Centre is extremely pleased to announce that CMC Associate Composer

Robert Lemay’s Mare Tranquilitantis has taken 2nd Prize in the International Composition Prize

Luxembourg 2007. The piece, composed specifically for the Luxembourg Sinfonietta, was

selected from a competitive roster of 152 works by as many composers from 38 different countries.

The final stage of the competition took place on October 27th in a public concert by the

Luxembourg Sinfonietta at the Centre des Arts Pluriels in Ettelbruck, Luxembourg, for which

Lemay was invited to assist with the rehearsals. As if the pressure of a live competition wasn’t

enough, the concert was also broadcast by the European Broadcasting Union, one of the largest

associations of national broadcasters in the world.

The international jury - consisting of Xiaogang Ye (China), Jurgen Blume (Germany), John Casken

(Great Britain), Klaus Ager (Austria), and Marcel Wengler (Luxembourg) - made their decisions

directly following the concert. Shortly after, it was announced that Robert Lemay had taken 2nd

Prize in this prestigious competition, with 1st Prize going to Britian’s Nicholas Casswell.

For his achievement, Lemay receives a cash prize of 2,000 Euros. As well, the prize-winning works

will be recorded for commercial release by the Luxembourg Sinfonietta in 2008.

Lemay is the second Canadian composer to reach the finals of the International Composition

Prize Luxembourg. CMC Associate Alice Ho placed in the finals of the 2006 competition.

However, he is the first to take a prize.

About Robert Lemay: Robert Lemay is the President and the Co-Artistic Director
