Collège Boréal is a French-language institution of post-secondary and skills-training that contributes to the development of communities in Northern and central-southwestern Ontario. In addition, many English speakers take French as a second language courses there.

In the late 1980s a group of community leaders began discussing the possibility of establishing a French-language college in Northern Ontario. Their dream was realized when the college‘s main campus in Greater Sudbury was established in 1995.

Campuses were also established in Hearst, Kapuskasing, New Liskeard, Nipissing (Sturgeon Falls), Timmins, Toronto, and Centre Sud-Ouest (in the London area). The college also offers courses in numerous other cities such as Barrie, Hamilton and Windsor through a network of student access centres.

The college is a leader in the development of telecommunications infrastructure in educational institutes in Canada. Collège Boréal is one of only two exclusively French community colleges in the province. The college came out on top of the 24 Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology of Ontario for the sixth consecutive year, with a graduation rate of 77.4 percent, compared to the provincial average of 64.9 percent.

Collège Boréal also came in first province-wide for employer satisfaction, with a rate of 97.5 percent, compared to a provincial average of 93.1 percent. It is recognized for the creation of innovative ideas such as the employment guarantee. Graduates of certain programs who do not find employment after they leave school can take another course free.

The main Sudbury campus is also home of theatre productions by Theatre du Nouvel-Ontario. Although it is barely a decade old

The college offers training in theatre production.

Promoting the cultures and arts of the First Nations, Francophone, Anglophone, and Metis populations of the French River-Nipissing corridor is the mission of the French River Cultural Industries Council (FRCIC), a not-for-profit organization dedicated and mandated to bringing economic development to the region through the celebration of local cultures and arts. The group officially evolved into itself in 2009 when it became incorporated. The FRCIC has formed excellent working relationships with several area cultural groups and tirelessly pursues new ones.

To date, it has achieved laudable success in developing valuable community programs. For adults, the FRCIC offers culturally specific courses approved by its cultural advisors and given by culturally appropriate instructors. For youth aged 6-16, the Summer Arts Experience that takes place over five days in August provides the opportunity to experience dance, visual arts and crafts, drama, music, and culture from the First Nations, Francophone, Metis, and Anglophone populations. The FRCIC is also expanding its scope in 2012, hosting the First Annual Arts and Cultural Festival, which will float from community to community within the region.

The Backstreet Gallery is the FRCIC’s heart and soul as the location where creativity, commitment, and enterprise collide, and as a permanent display of local talent. With 300 people attending the inaugural—and now annual—vernissage in November 2010, this hub of cultural activity shines from within with remarkable artwork, a former health centre reclaimed and renovated, redecorated and revived.

Specializing in Nostalgia

Gordon Drysdale was born in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada.  His artistic talents have been abundantly evident since early childhood. Gordon has always been close to a paint brush or a pencil exercising and honing his skills as an artist and craftsman.  In 1988 Gordon returned to his home roots in Sudbury Ontario after spending 12 years in Medicine Hat,
Alberta and 7 years on Manitoulin Island. 1988 was the year of decision to take a step in faith and pursue, full time, the art career that was so obviously destined to be his.”It is a gift and a gift should be used,to honour the giver, especially when it comes from the ultimate gift giver”.

Since embarking on this journey, Gordon has produced hundreds of works of art. He began working in oils and switched to acrylics for speed and versatility by 1995. He is accomplished in both of these media as well as watercolour, conte and pen & ink.

Gordon has produced over 50 limited edition prints, including those displayed on his website. His paintings have been purchased by corporate and private collectors around the world, and include two in the permanent collection of the Province of Ontario.

Gordon paints in a very realistic style and many of his works are often mistaken for photographs. In 1999 he won the national first place award in the ART OF THE AUTOMOBILE competition, sponsored by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada. In 2000 he took national third  in the same venue and national second place in 2002.

Artist/Teacher

“I have been painting since 1987.  Lessons for 7 years gave me the basics I needed to continue.  I paint in oil, acrylics, sketching, and have taken workshops in colour pencil, watercolour, pastels and much more.  Every workshop or lesson I have attended, I have learned from it.  I use it in every art piece that I produce.  I read many books about techniques or different kinds of mediums.  This is how I learned my trade.

En Plein Aire Landscape Painter

A professional en plein aire landscape painter, Pierre Sabourin makes his home in Killarney, Ontario. He studied Fine Arts at the University of Ottawa and the National Drawing and Print Council of Canada at the University of Calgary; he has also apprenticed with landscape painter Ferenc Szeles of Hungary. Through the years, Pierre has developed a style of landscape painting that draws upon the influences of Tom Thompson, J.E.H Macdonald, Arthur Lismer, Lawren Harris, Vincent Van Gogh, Igor Grabar, Camile Corot and Edouward Manet. Sabourin is drawn to bold expressionism with rich color and thick impasto manipulating paint and creating shadow, while at times incorporates glass in pigments for luminosity.

“There is a feeling you get when painting in the woods, becoming one with God and universal nature. Touched by this Holy Spirit a deep sense of acceptance prevails. As everything begins to interact, you feel the energy, the power and the peace all around you. You become suspended in time, your mind becomes clear, and you see things that you have never seen before and you know you’re alive. As a young man I traveled across Canada from Newfoundland to Vancouver Island which instilled in me a sense of national pride in Canada’s beauty and diverse culture.  Growing up in Sudbury, Ontario during the peak of nickel smelting in the 50’s and 60’s and experiencing the destruction of nature had a profound effect on me.”

Marlies Schoenefeld is well known for her landscapes of Killarney Park and the North Channel of Lake Huron.

The woods, water and rocks of the Canadian Shield were her training ground for aquarells,  pastels and acrylic paintings.

During the summer Marlies takes her canoe or kayak to her favourite places to paint en plein air.

She shares her love for watercolours with students in Killarney Park and on Paddle and Paint trips on Lake Huron.

Her love of the outdoors and the natural world has inspired her to find the essence of the northern landscape. She uses this knowledge of the woods, the waters and the rocks to simplify the complexity of colour and shapes to the absolute essentials to enable the viewer to feel the scene and become a part of it.

A son of a commercial pilot who died before I was born on March 7, 1929, in Bremen, Germany and a young woman who lost her life due to puerperal fever, just after giving birth to me, I was adopted by my maternal grandfather. He happened to be a high ranking engineer but was shafted because he refused to join the Nazi party. He raised me in the spirit of opposition but in 1944 I was taken into the air force thus not completing high school. Following turbulent times during and after the war and escaping from an East German prison I worked in the Westphalian coal mines but chose to leave them for health reasons and ended up in a German unit of the U.S. Army.

There was not much of a future to be expected. I changed course by emigrating to Canada. Because of my formal training I was destined to go into mining again. Working in Creighton as a slusherman and blasting boss after 17 eyars of mining I did not see that as the end of the line. With the help of my wife I managed to work in the mine while taking up studies at Laurentian University. Going full-time in 1964 and graduating in 1966 with honours I went on to study at four universities. We raised a family of two. I taught history, geography and German at high schools in Sault Ste Marie and Midland, became a head of history and a member of the Faculty of Education at the University of Toronto.

Presently I am an accomplished artist, mainly painting landscapes and historical scenes, working as a volunteer and writing. My next book is going into the scariest times of my youth in Germany.

Inspired by her family whose love of the outdoors manifested itself by countless days of skiing, fishing and camping Colette was drawn by the beauty and mystery of nature at an early age. She was always on the lookout for wildlife, exploring every inch of the forest floor or tree canopy. Her passion for  animals and wildlife coupled with her insatiable desire to draw led Colette to pursue a degree in Biology, while she continued to paint and draw part-time.

In 2004, Colette realized she wanted to pursue her lifelong dream and art became her primary profession when she launched her website www.colettetheriault.com.  Through her website, Colette has artwork commissioned from clients across the United States and Canada with her most recent project involving the US Pentagon (K-9 Detection Division) in Arlington, VA.

Colette captures the essence of her subjects using soft pastels on archival suede and velour or sandpaper. She often finds herself experimenting with colored pencil on drafting film but also enjoys the more traditional mediums of graphite pencils and watercolor.  It takes Colette countless hours to create her finely detailed works of mainly pets and wildlife in a photo-realistic style. A perfectionist by nature, she meticulously draws or paints her subjects with utmost attention to detail, down to individual hairs and strands of grass.

Recently, Colette has begun showing her work publicly through the Sudbury Art Club’s biannual art shows. Her work has also been accepted in various juried art exhibitions such as La Cloche and NOAA, with several paintings earning awards.

Due to numerous requests from fellow artists, Colette occasionally devotes time teaching workshops to individuals and local/regional art clubs demonstrating the pastel and graphite techniques she uses to  create her finely detailed portraits.  Please inquire with the artist for the workshop schedule or for additional information.

Originally from Toronto, I’ve lived in several places in Ontario before
settling in Sudbury in 2001. Currently, I own and operate a home-based
ceramic art studio called Creative Clay Ceramics. I make a variety of
three-dimensional ceramic flower pictures as well as many styles of
porcelain lace-draped figurines. I’ve been in business since May, 2010;
however, I’ve worked with ceramics and porcelain most of my life.  I’m a
third generation ceramic artist. My late grandmother started it all back in
the 1940s and had her own studios in Barrie and Toronto. My late mother
followed her lead and had studios in the Parry Sound area in the mid to late
1970s. Their accomplishments would later be my inspiration.  Although I was
born into it, I initially never saw myself doing it as any more than a
hobby. What changed my mind was when I was an author in my youth I decided
to design the cover of my first novel. I received many compliments for my
effort. That was what awakened my artistic passion and from then on, it was
a goal of mine to do ceramics seriously and operate my own studio. I now
work at my craft full time and have received much support and appreciation
for my craft. I’ve come a long way and I have seen my work evolve with new
ideas coming from me and also suggestions from others.

David Anselmo/Hideway Films

David Joseph Anselmo was born in Sudbury, Ontario, far from any connection to show business. After studying Law, Psychology and Theatre at Sudbury’s Laurentian University, he travelled abroad, heading to Europe to expand his acting repertoire with smaller theatre groups and productions.

A chance visit to a friend in South Korea would prove to be a kickstart to a seven year stint in Korean television and film, notably appearing in The Host (2007), R-Point (2004) and Welcome to Dongmakgol (2005), for which he gained 20 pounds and shaved his head to play a special forces commander.

In 2011 he returned home to Canada and formed Hideaway Pictures, with an eye to develop television and film opportunities in Northern Ontario. He doubled down on his commitment to his hometown’s film prospects, opening the Northern Ontario Film Studios, Northern Ontario’s first film production hub. The studio started big, playing host to 5 productions in its first 5 months of existence, and attracting notice from Playback Magazine and The Hollywood Reporter.

In 2012, Mr Anselmo serviced his first production in Northern Ontario “Cas & Dylan”, starring Richard Dreyfus and directed by Jason Priestley, produced “Be My Valentine” for the Hallmark Channel starring William Baldwin, and an independent feature with partnership from Telefilm entitled “The Privileged”. In 2013, he served as Executive Producer on two films for the Hallmark Channel – “Christmas with Tucker” and “Star Spangled Banners” filmed in North Bay- as well as Co-Producer one of the biggest features to come to Northern Ontario, “Ice Soldiers”, an Action feature for Sony Pictures International starring Dominic Purcell, Adam Beach and Michael Ironside

Sculpture by Tyler Fauvelle (a division of Creative Casts Ltd.)

‘Hopeful Return’

Bio:  Tyler sculpts in clay, creating both original and limited edition sculptures.  Sculptures may be original kiln-fired clay, or cast in variety of casting materials, such as bronze, bonded bronze, art resin, and hydrostone.  The sculptures blend realism with impressionistic aspects, and feature subjects inspired by mining, prospecting, wildlife, and history.  Choose from existing work, or commission one with a specific subject in mind.
We welcome all themes, and works can range in size from a 6″ sculpture, to a larger-than-life sized bronze monument.

Recently, Tyler completed three 7ft. sculptures commemorating Sandy McIntyre, Jack Wilson and Benny Hollinger, prospectors whose discoveries launched one of the biggest gold rushes in history, leading to the founding of Timmins in 1912. The bronze monuments will be unveiled in 2012, in honour of the Timmins centennial.

Jon Butler, La Cloche Photographer:

Jon Butler, a retired newspaper executive who changed his clothes to enjoy the passing seasons of life, has been capturing La Cloche light for over 30 years. He concentrates on solitary and contemplative landscapes and atmospheric effects.
The photographs exemplify Jon’s unique sense of light. Exhibition photographs are usually taken at dawn before sunrise with no filters or digital enhancement.  All are in a limited series of 10 or less.
Jon’s ‘Photo Haiku’ combine his photographs with original haiku. A haiku is the expression of temporary enlightenment, in which we see into life and in this case it is La Cloche.

Jon and his wife Kerry live in the village of Willisville located in the heart of the La Cloche Mountains. They are founding members of the La Cloche Mountains Preservation Society and the Willisville Mountain Project, dedicated to preserve Willisville Mountain and the beauty of La Cloche. In 2011 Jon published the book ‘Visions of La Cloche, Contemplating La Cloche with Words and Photographs’.

Jon’s photographs are available at Turners Gallery of Little Current, The Art Gallery of Sudbury gift shop, Killarney Park Store, www.lacloche.ca, and The Red Dog Whitefish Falls. Since 2001 Jon has had seven solo exhibitions, three two person shows and participated in 50 juried and group exhibits.

“Much of the subject matter that I photograph portrays my interest in architecture and heritage. This interest is reflected in my urban and rural landscape photographs. Polaroid film is frequently used in my photographic endeavor to create images that appear painterly or surreal. Abstract imagery is also an area of interest”
